The City Engineer role is a full-time, exempt position with benefits and a preferred hiring range of $41.84 - $47.07 per hour (equivalent to $87,027 - $97,905 annually); however, an exact salary will be dependent upon the selected candidate's qualifications/experience and in compliance with City policy. In this role, you'll be pivotal in planning, organizing, and directing the design and construction of capital improvements while ensuring compliance with City land development, stormwater management, and erosion control policies, rules, and regulations.As the City Engineer within Community Development, you'll:
  • Manage the engineered comprehensive site plan review process and participate in the review of engineered comprehensive site plans to ensure compliance with the City’s Design and Construction Standards Manual (DCSM) and other applicable land development regulations;
  • Provide support to the Department by reviewing and commenting upon development proposals associated with rezonings, special use permit requests, street and alley closing requests, major subdivisions, and other matters;
  • Serve as the administrator and enforce the City's erosion and sediment control and stormwater regulations, including enforcing subdivision regulations;
  • Oversee the review and approval of subdivision and site work by private parties;
  • Oversees and manage major capital improvement projects, including the development of cost estimates and schedules for capital improvement projects and regulatory programs;
  • Administer design and construction contracts;
  • Support the administration of an provide inspection of flood control/water supply dams;
  • Coordinate work with other departments and agencies, including Federal, State, and City;
  • Provide liaison with the public, land developers, and private engineers;
  • Supervise and direct assigned employees in the preparation of design criteria, designs, analysis, specifications, plans, inspections, cost estimates, tabulations of contract bids, contract payments, and related matters;
  • Establish employee schedules, assign tasks, and evaluate the performance of employees, including reviewing work and giving suggestions on public works projects;
  • Prepare and monitor the division's budget;
  • Prepare a variety of technical reports and give presentations on them, as required.

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil engineering and considerable (3-5 years) experience in professional civil engineering work, including some supervisory experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
